I love baking and decorating cakes.  I’ve made my own cake for each of the girls’ birthdays since their first birthday and I’m already planning a super cute Peppa Pig cake for Ava’s second birthday.  Fondant tends to be the way to go when you want to decorate a cake, especially when you want to add detailed pieces.  The problem is that fondant does not generally taste very good.

I have a solution for you!  Airheads makes for the perfect material when it comes to crafting cake decorations as they are mouldable and flavourful.  Airheads is a taffy you are probably familiar with and they come in a variety of long lasting fruit flavours including white mystery, cherry, lemon, blue raspberry, orange, watermelon. Plus they are easy enough to craft with that you can get your kids to help you out!

My favourite flavour is cherry, although truth be told they all have a great tangy-sweet flavour with just a perfect amount of chewy goodness that make them easy to eat.

I made an amazing vanilla bean two layer cake smothered with a vanilla butter cream frosting.  I suggest you use your favourite recipe or a box mix, but I would stick with vanilla or lemon cake to complement the great flavour of the Airheads.  If someone in your family has gluten intolerance or has a peanut allergy then the other great thing about using Airheads is that they are gluten and peanut free.

Directions:

Microwave Airheads for 3-5 seconds on wax paper to keep the Airheads from sticking to surfaces.  This will make them easier to work with, or you can rub them between your hands until warm and soft.  Do this one or two at a time.

For the Christmas bulbs, use any flavour of your choices, cut into pieces roughly the size of the bulb you want to craft.

Roll into a Christmas bulb shape and set aside.

Stretch out a watermelon flavoured Airheads slightly then use a plastic piping tip to cut circles out.

Press the green circles onto each bulb you have created to complete the look.  Use a butter knife to create the rings around the green portion of the bulbs.

Place the bulbs around the cake in any pattern you like and use the green decorating gel to create the appearance of a string of lights.  Alternatively you can mould watermelon Airheads into a string shape.

the appearance of this cake is very intriguing....but can't we make it in chocolate?

You definitely could, I just think the flavours work better with vanilla or citrus cake. :)
