Disclosure: I was provided product by BEHR to write this post but the thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

September saw us move into our new house and during all the unpacking and setting up phase I decided we definitely needed to make use of the empty wall and breakfast bar.  Off we went to ikea to grab two Bosse stools and the BEKVÄM Kitchen cart.  Both are solid birch which is nice as it is solid wood but let’s be honest, birch looks a little bit cheap.

I knew right away I wanted to tackle the pieces with some BEHR paint to update them and make them not look like Ikea. I decided I wanted to show off the solid wood and stain the seats and top of the cart darker and then use BEHR Cameo White (MQ3-32) paint from the Marquee line to brighten up the body and legs.  I knew it would be a nice contrast and couldn’t wait to get started!

I started off by using a plane sander with 150 grit paper and worked up to 220 on the stools as they were already finished.  The cart is unfinished so I only used the 220 grit paper to smooth out the surface.

After vacuuming up and wiping everything down I started staining the tops.  I used a one step stain so there was no need to condition the wood first.  Just apply with a clean brush or lint free cloth, let it sit for 2-3 minutes and wipe off with a lint free cloth.  Once the stain is dry you will want to apply a finish.  I went with a satin spray on finish and applied it twice to the stained areas.

Next it was time to get to painting.  I taped off the stained parts once the finish was dry and got out my BEHR Cameo White (MQ3-32) paint and clean paint brush.  Having used the Marquee before on bare wood I was confident I didn’t need to use primer first.  As expected, it covered the wood nicely enough on the first coat on all three pieces.   It did require a second coat shortly after the first coat dried and then a few touch ups.

I finished it all off by spraying all three pieces with two coats of finish.

What do you think?
