DIY Paint Drip Coffee Mugs

DIY Paint Drip Coffee Mugs inspired by the BEHR 2016 Color Trends

Disclosure: I was provided product by BEHR to write this post but the thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

These DIY Paint Drip Coffee Mugs were inspired by the BEHR 2016 Color Trends.  Also a little bit by my wish to become a morning person.  Coffee… bright colours?  It’s a start, right?

The BEHR 2016 Color Trends celebrate the importance of colour in creating sensory-rich spaces.  There are four distinct palettes – High Contrast, Luxe Dimension, Blurred Boundaries, and Lyrical Living.

For my project I chose to primarily use BEHR Premium Plus Ultra paint in colours from the high contrast palette – Pagoda (T16-02), Emperor’s Silk (T16-03) and Canary Diamond (T16-05) plus Coralette (T16-07) from the Luxe Dimension palette.

I used mugs I found at the Dollar store for this project and started off by using painters tape to block off the lip of the cup.  I also taped the inside of the mugs just to be safe.  You don’t want the paint on any surface that will actually touch your beverage or mouth.

Next… have some fun!  I used paint brushes on the upside down mugs to create generous drips down the sides of the mugs.  I started with the dark colours and went lighter.  It doesn’t take long for the paint to try on the mug – about 10-15 minutes.  I worked two colours at a time on the mug with all my chosen colours

From experience, use a dry brush each time.  You do not want the paint to get watery, it works much better when the paint is thick.

Once you have achieved the look you want allow the paint to dry until it is just dry enough not to run more then remove the painters tape and allow to dry upright.

Hand-wash only.

Just be careful with using art/ wall paints on things you eat/drink out of. Wall paints no longer contain, lead mercury or arsenic, but they may contain chromium, pthalates and cadmium still.

That is why, as I mentioned, I taped it off so the paint would come nowhere near your mouth. Unless you have some weird habit of licking the side of mugs.
