Best Spanish Beach Destinations for Families

Best Spanish Beach Destinations for Families

A family vacation to Spain comes with so many destination options, from big cities to cultural havens to coastal beach towns. If you have ever spent any time in Europe, a lot of families consider some beaches more kid and family friendly than others. While it is always a good idea to take the kids along with you so that they can really experience the culture, having a couple family friendly beaches makes everything so much easier.

Each of these Spanish beach destinations is noted as being some the best family friendly beaches around Spain, which has two very different coastlines and some offshore islands to choose from.

Beaches of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain

Puerto de La Cruz

When you think about the Canary Islands, college crowds and crazy parties come to mind, but the island of Tenerife is home to sleepy towns where resorts have quietly immersed themselves into the local fabric and colour. Puerto de La Cruz is on the northern end of the island, and lined with beautiful beaches just as beautiful as the populated bar districts of Los Cristianos. A water park and marine park with orca and dolphin shows make this the family friendly destination of the Canaries.

 Benidorm

Benidorm

Part of the Costa Blanca stretch of beach towns, Benidorm is a suburb of Alicante and the budget friendly option for families. Clean beaches with small bathhouses, restrooms and east to reach dining and snack carts make it easy for families to plan the day around children. Like other beach communities in this area, the city is right on the edge of the sand so you can go quickly from beach to hotel or apartment rental. Music festivals and city wide family friendly events are always being organized and held, and an amusement park is another easy way to fill a day.

 Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar

Costa Brava is famous for its glitzy, celeb populated beaches, but Tossa de Mar is more laid back, and family oriented. Its the destination for anyone that enjoys the beach, but doesn’t enjoy the beach bar scene– preferring cultural and local entertainment instead. This beach destination is blocked in by Massis de les Cadiretes, making it the perfect place for families that want to camp, hike and explore nature as part of their beach vacation. The main city beach is walled in on one side by a medieval castle, which kids love, a second beach is within the city walls and La Mar Menuda beach is a recreational haven with nets, bikes for hire and other courts for playing.

 Bilbao

Bilbao

If you are headed towards the northern coast of Spain, Bilbao is littered with dramatic coastline and plenty of sandy beaches. This is a great road trip destination, as you can rent a car and beach hop from Bilbao to San Sebastian, stopping in one town after the other to enjoy the beaches, historical towns and local life. More adventurous families with children that love to hike and find explore hidden coves will fall in love with this area.
