Mix It Up! By Hervé Tullet #FMEGifts14

Mix it up

Accept Hervé Tullet’s irresistible invitation to mix it up in a dazzling adventure of whimsy and wonder. Follow the artist’s simple instructions, and suddenly colors appear, mix, splatter, and vanish in a world powered only by the reader’s imagination. Tullet—who joins such greats as Eric Carle and Leo Lionni as a master of his craft—sets readers on an extraordinary interactive journey all within the printed page.  Tullet prompts plenty of giggles in addition to a profound understanding of colors, and once again displays his unique genius and vision in a work that is a glorious and richly satisfying companion to Press Here. (Ages 3-5 )

Mix it up! asks its readers to follow instructions to play with colours.  We are asked to tilt pages, shake and even rub colours together to have them magically create a new colour-effect on the follow two page spread.    As kids rub one colour onto the next they are pulled into make-believe while they are introduced to the concept of mixing colours to create new ones.

This is a mess free way for children to explore paint for the first time in a way that they will quickly becoming willing learners as they become active participants in Mixing it up.  This is one of the most seriously fun and exciting books I have seen yet.  It is recommended for ages 3 to 5 but I wouldn’t hesitate to go as young as 18 months with supervision as its such a great introduction to the theory of colours.

I also love the instructions for each activity the reader is asked to do.  What a wonderful way to work on reading comprehension.

Mix it up is truly a magical book and completely different from everything else out there.
