Heinz Baby Food Review & Giveaway

IMG_1805

I generally feed my girls homemade food but I do like to keep on hand “back up” items like baby food jars and pouches as well as everyday staples such as infant cereals.  I’d love to always have the energy to whip up a batch of baby food on top of whatever else I am cooking when our freezer stock runs low but that isn’t always the case. You can generally find an entire shelf in my kitchen of Heinz Organic Baby products just waiting for me to be in need of a quick, easy and nutritious solution.

When I last went to stock up, I couldn’t find the jarred organic foods from Heinz we typically buy but Ava also loves the Heinz Mom’s Recipe jars and they contain nutritious ingredients that are similar to those found in the organic line – just not certified organic ingredients.  Not a big deal since I don’t always buy organic ingredients when I make homemade foods anyway.

One of our favourites from the Mom’s Recipe line is the Sweet Potato and Beef Medley.  It is similar in flavour to a recipe I typically make myself for her and just the right combination of chunky and smooth.   I love that you can see the vegetables in this food and that there are no salt, sugar, or preservatives.

I often see people talk about amount of water listed in commercial baby foods, and indeed Heinz does list water as the first ingredient in many of their jarred baby foods.   I would love to know what people use to create a smooth texture in their baby food if they aren’t adding water though.  I often have to use copious amounts of water to get the texture to be palatable so I absolutely have no issues with this particular point of contention.

The ingredients in the Sweet Potato and Beef Medley include WATER, SWEET POTATOES, CARROTS, BEEF, PEAS, TOMATO PUREE, LENTILS, BROWN RICE FLOUR, YELLOW SPLIT PEAS, DEHYDRATED POTATOES, ONION POWDER, BEEF EXTRACT, SPICE.

See.  Nothing Scary.  Well Beef Extract doesn’t sound too appetizing but its basically roast beef drippings – the stuff you make gravy out of.  Certainly nothing in there I wouldn’t want to feed my child.  Plus Ava loves it just as much as my homemade cooking judging by how eager she always is to eat it!

Heinz actually has a full range of 100% certified Organic food though including cereal, baby and toddler food, juice and snacks.  One of our favourites from the Organic line is the Organic Vegetables, Beef & Spaghetti Casserole.  It is meant for 8 months and lists as ingredients: Water, Organic carrots, Organic beef, Organic Zucchini, Organic Tomato Paste, Organic Yellow Split Peas, Organic Pasta, Organic Lentils, Organic Concentrated Pear Juice, Organic Onion Powder, Organic  Spice.  Nothing but goodness, and it makes for a well balanced meal.

I also love the quality and convenience of the Heinz Organic Pouches.  The pouches actually say to pour out and serve with a spoon but try telling that to my two girls who just want to to do it themselves!  Even Ava at only 10 months old prefers to just eat it on her own which has proven to be a handy way to give her “dessert” and keep her quiet while I eat my own food.

The ingredients in the pouches are amazing and they taste really great too!  Our favourite flavours are the Banana Brown Rice Quinoa and the Strawberry Plum Barley Organic Pouches.  They are full of simple, organic ingredients and I love the inclusion of whole grains and “superfoods” which I have not seen in other infant food pouches.

Of course, Ava isn’t too fussy about what is in her food – that is my job! –  she only cares about the flavour and this baby definitely gives Heinz Baby one giant smile.

For those times when convenience is a must Heinz Organic line will definitely remain in our cupboards.
