Owl Smash Cake (Updated)

This Owl Smash Cake is an adorable first birthday cake perfect for a 1st birthday party or a cake smash photography session!

I decided to redo my Owl Smash Cake tutorial with better pictures and fix the mistakes I made the first time.  This Owl Smash Cake really is so easy to make that I just made it again to redo the pictures.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cakes baked in 1-quart Pyrex bowls (1 Cake mix split between the two bowls, or 1 cake recipe)
  • 2 Oreo cookies
  • 2 orange Starbursts
  • Chocolate Icing
  • Coloured Icing
  • 2 brown candies (Junior mints, M&Ms, Smarties etc…)
  • White Chocolate Chips

Directions:

To start I baked two cakes in a 1 qt pyrex glass bowl according to my cake recipe. Make sure you grease the bowl either with butter or Pam so the cake comes out easily.

Allow the cakes to cool, then cut off the top so it is level before removing the cake from the bowl.

Spread icing on the top of the bottom cake.

Cover the bottom cake with the icing.  To create “feathers” apply with a butter knife and pull at the icing a bit.

Layer the top cake on top creating a “ball”.

Next cover the rest of the body in icing.

Pipe chocolate icing onto the cake to create wings.

Separate the two Oreo cookies, leaving the cream on one side of the cookies for the eyes. Place on cake.

Cut one of the plain cookies in half and insert into cake for the ears.  Next shape one of the starbursts into a triangle for the nose and press into the icing. It is easier if you microwave the candy for about 30 seconds to soften it.  Dot the back of your brown candy with icing and press into the white of the Oreos. Press white chocolate chips into the wings to create a dot pattern.

Cover the Oreo “ears” with the coloured icing.    I used pink sparkle gel icing from Wilton to place a heart above the one eye.  Shape two more orange starbursts into the shape of feet and use a knife to cut the “toes”.

Now go celebrate a special little ones first birthday!

Just made this for my girls' party. It turned out so cute! I used another fruity chew candy molded into a bow, and I used vanilla wafers since I didn't have sandwich cookies. I did the main bird light brown and pink wings to cut down on the coloring (mostly, I didn't feel like doing it ;).

Making this cake for my 1yr old today! I wish you would have added white chocolate chips to your ingredient list. I noticed them in the picture on the wings but now I don't have time to go get any! It will still be cute though.
