The Best Books for Baby from DK

baby-boutique-button-185x185Keira is such an avid book lover and has been since she’s been able to grasp objects.  One of her very first words was “Book”.  Her collection contains many books by DK and they are among her favourites as they are some of the most engaging she owns.

DK carries an amazing selection of books and for a limited time they are available in the DK Baby Boutique at 30% Off.  Whether parenting is “old hat” or new to you, DK has a book for you from tips on pregnancy and birth to feeding baby.  Don’t forget all the titles available for baby herself!

I was sent a selection from the boutique, including Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook, Baby Surprises, My Little Carry Books – Baby Animals, Touch and Feel Bathtime, Feel and Find Fun Farm.

Organic Baby & Toddler CookbookFresh, additive-free natural foods are essential for the healthy development of all children. Now every parent can prepare tasty and nutritious meals with the Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook. Why Choose Organic Food? Babies in the womb and young children are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of pesticides, additives, and genetically modified ingredients in food. Lizzie Vann, founder of Baby Organix in the UK, a pioneering organic babyfood company, explains how to avoid these dangerous elements, including helpful tips on deciphering food labels and identifying the most harmful additives to avoid. She also gives advice on where to shop for organic products and what organic staples to buy. Easy and quick recipes and menu plans are carefully adapted for each stage of your child’s development. Each section outlines essential superfoods for each age stage and provides appetizing recipes for healthy, satisfying meals. From fruit purees for our baby to healthy snacks and independent food choices for the toddler, there is food here that the whole family will enjoy. Advice for vegetarians and children with special dietary needs is also featured. Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook explains the benefits of organic food for you, your child, and for the environment.

When I started introducing Keira to real food it as important to me to make her real homemade food from organic produce.  Of course I still always had store bought organic food on hand for emergencies, but she mostly ate homemade food.  Their bodies are so little that it only makes sense to be extra careful of what they ingest.

This book is full of really wonderful ideas for different recipes and great tips and information as well.  The recipes are full of wonderful whole foods and avoid the unnecessary use of added salt and sugar.

I dislike that it advocates introducing food prior to 6 months which goes against WHO guidelines, but that is a personal thing, and they also detail what to look for in a baby that is “ready”.  My mother introduced me to baby cereal at 3 months old and I turned out mostly OK.  I also dislike the use of canned tomatoes vs. fresh tomatoes.  It does mention that there are organic canned tomatoes very briefly but I wish it mentioned to look for organic un-salted canned tomatoes.

I love that this book is arranged by age which is very helpful.  Each recipe also details storage and nutritional values of each meal.

9781465401694HThis chunky board book is just right for babies, as interactive pictures of babies’ favorite toys are hiding under inviting flaps — from a jack-in-the box and frog puppet, to a teddy bear, toy elephant, and more make for an intriguing, tactile way to explore shape and texture.

This book features tabbed “peekaboo” fold outs with adorable pictures.  Each page asks “Who’s hiding” and each fold out has a picture with a description of what is inside.

“Who’s hiding behind the frilly apron?”  ->  “Cuddly Bunny!  She has long floppy ears.”

Keira loves exploring the book and revealing the surprise under the flaps.  She is at the age now where she is the one telling me what she sees.  This is such a great title to help baby explore the world around them.

9780756692827HFun first books to pick up and carry around, for toddlers on the go! Featuring easy-grip, die-cut handles, this board book is just the right size for toddlers’ hands.

  • Innovative carry handle promotes book-handling skills and manual dexterity
  • Informative rhyming text builds language and encourages reading readiness
  • Educational subjects enhance early learning

This one is adorable and Keira loves running around with it gripped in her hand.  Like most little ones, she absolutely is enthralled with animals so this was an instant hit.  She already know many animals but calls most of them by the sound they make rather than their names so I think reading such books will help her start using proper names.  Although, I have to admit that I will be terribly sad when “Gah Gah” becomes “Duck”.

9781465401656HToddlers will love learning about bath-time with the interactive images in this board book that features shiny bubbles, a soft fluffy towel, a spongy starfish, and more of their favorite toys and bath-time accessories, with appealing touch-and-feel elements on every spread that help build sensory development as well as language and reading readiness.

A sparkly jacket encourages toddlers to pick up the book, the bright bold interior pages help them develop object recognition, and the descriptive text builds their language skills — making this series a favorite for both parents and children.

The Touch and Feel series are really great books that we have enjoyed since Keira was much younger.  The different textures on each page is really engaging for her, even now at 2 years old.  Now that she is talking it is great for having her point objects out.  She loves shouting out “Bubbles” on the first page

9781465409249HExploring the farm is more fun than ever with this interactive feel-and-find book. Using textured tabs to find accompanying images, toddlers are introduced to sheep with woolly fleece, chicks and ducklings with fuzzy down, pigs with pink foil noses, and more.

This is another really great, engaging title with many different textures for baby to feel.  Throw in some cute little animals and you have a real winner on hand!
