The Historic Omni King Edward Hotel in Downtown Toronto

King Edward Hotel

While attending LINK2013, a really fabulous blogging conference, I was treated to two nights stay at the luxurious and historic Omni King Edward Hotel.  The King Eddy is located right in downtown Toronto in the Financial district, just steps away from restaurants, shopping and attractions such as the Hockey Hall of Fame, the St. Lawrence Market and the Toronto Eaton Centre.  The Omni King Edward hotel is Toronto’s first luxury hotel and has hosted visitors for over 100 years, including Ernest Hemingway, The Beatles, Elizabeth Taylor, among others.

It is a short walk away from Toronto Union Station and for those driving in the Hotel offers valet service, although I opted to park my car in underground parking nearby.

King Edward Hotel Room

The King Edward Hotel was very recently taken over by Omni Hotels and Resorts and is currently in the midst of updating and renovating all their rooms.  The room I stayed in, and took pictures of is not updated but was still comfortable and very clean.

The mattress on the bed was supportive enough that I was able to sleep in complete comfort and thanks to the ample amount of pillows on the King Sized bed I was able to make up for not having brought my body pillow.  Trust me, if this pregnant lady could get a good nights rest, anyone could!

The sitting area was also a nice touch and allowed me a comfortable place to rest when needed.

King Edward Hotel Room

Both the room and the  bathroom was more than spacious.  The room featured a safe, radio/alarm clock, Keurig Coffee machine, TV with Cable Service, a fully stocked mini bar and a large work desk.   You will also find some of the comforts of home including complimentary newspaper, an Iron and Ironing board, bathrobe and hair dryer.    Free WiFi, morning beverage and much more were included as I am a registered Omni Select Guest member.   (Which is free to sign up for!)

Those travelling with kids will be pleased to learn about the Omni Sensational Kids program which is also available at the King Edward.  Upon check-in, children receive a backpack filled with crayons, activities and more.  Don’t forget that kids also receive milk and cookies delivered on the first night!

Crystal Ballroom

I was taken on a tour of the hotel which included a rare look at the 17th floor and one of the newly renovated rooms.

The 17th floor is where the historic Cyrstal Ballroom was located and has been closed off to general access since the 1950s due to fire codes and a lack of electricity.  The gorgeous chandeliers that once graced this huge room  have unfortunately been sold off.  The room may not be as glorious as it once was, but you can see glimmers of the beauty that it must have been in all the little intricate details and architecture.  The ballroom offers floor to ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the city.

Omni has plans to do a full restoration of the Ballroom which should be ready for use again in 2015, when I am sure it will once again be the “must-go-to” place for weddings and other events.

The newly renovated room I had the chance to view was very modern looking, and had a boutique hotel feel and included the same amenities one would expect.  I am hoping my next stay will afford me the chance to stay in one of the renovated rooms!

There are also stories that the Hotel may be haunted, although my stay was ghost-free.
