Donate Naturally – Fundraise while you Shop!

I have a group of friends I met online during my pregnancy and most of them live in England.  I quickly found out that many of them shop for their groceries online.  At first I thought it was a bit odd, but then I quickly became jealous as I tried to get my groceries done between nap-times with a newborn and even more so now that I am juggling working full time with blogging and being a mom.  Getting the groceries done just isn’t a priority but unfortunately it is something that does need doing.

When I was invited to try out Donate Naturally’s organic grocery delivery service I was really excited.  Not only do they deliver organic groceries within the GTA and offer free shipping Canada-Wide but they also donate 15% of each order to the charity of your choice from a list of great organizations like sick kids, world vision, and many other charities across Canada. They also guarantee that you aren’t paying any more money for your groceries on their site than you would at major natural and organic grocery stores.

I received a Fresh Small Weekly Staples Bin (1% milk) as well as a Fresh Organic Fruit & Veggie Bin – Small to try out the service.

I had the bin delivered to my workplace and the receptionist was really impressed with how friendly the delivery driver was.  The bins are literally giant green bins filled with your order.  The Fresh small weekly staples bin includes a dozen Green Valley Free Run Eggs, a 1 Ltr bottle of Harmony Organic 1% Milk and a Brick Street Bakery Whole Wheat Multigrain loaf.  The Fresh Organic Fruit and Veggie Bin changes from week to week.  You can see all that was included in my bin below – all the produce is certified organic.

As an example the small bin for the week of March 25th included:

  • 3 Apples (Red Delicious)
  • 3 Oranges (Navel)
  • 4 Minneola Tangerines
  • 2 Pears (Bartlett)
  • 1 1/2 lbs of Bananas
  • 1 1/2 lbs of Potatoes (Yellow)
  • 1 Lettuce (Red Leaf)
  • 1 Broccoli
  • 5oz of spinach
  • 3 pieces of garlic

I was inspired by these ingredients to put together a yummy breakfast of French Toast with a Maple-Walnut Apple Topping.  Delicious!

I have to admit I’ve never really tried organic products before and I was really shocked in the difference between my regular groceries and the organic groceries we received from Donate Naturally.  The egg yolks were visibly brighter and richer.  The milk was really creamy and delicious.  I would compare the flavour to homogenized milk which was surprising to me because we normally buy 2% as I normally find 1% milk to taste like water with a little milk in it.

The loaf of bread was also amazingly soft and fresh.  It tasted as good (or even better) than homemade bread fresh out of the oven.

The produce was also just delicious and fresh.  I think I was most impressed by the carrots.  I am so used to bitter tasting carrots that I get surprised on the occasion I come across a sweet tasting carrot.  The entire bunch of carrots was like a surprise to me because each one of them tasted the way I believe a carrot should taste.

What a great concept! Love getting the organic food delivery - plus being able to donate to a great cause at the same time. A win-win for everyone, if you ask me!

That is a great concept, and there are companies like this in the US.
