My time in the High Risk Obstetrical Unit

When I experienced  Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) at 28 weeks gestation, which is the amniotic sac breaking before 37 weeks of gestation, I spent the next 5 days in the High Risk Obstetrical Unit.

Since I was on bed-rest and in a semi-private room, I had lots of opportunity to get to know the other girl in our room.

I found out that she was pregnant with twins after experiencing infertility.  I found out they had been trying to conceive for years with no luck, tried fertility treatments here in Canada and ultimately ended up going to the USA for a treatment not available here.

She was 33 weeks gestation at that point, while I was 28 weeks, but she had been in and out of the hospital for bleeding due to placental issues.  This time they weren’t going to let her go home due to other concerns about the twins.

I heard a lot about Twin A and Twin B – A boy and a girl – and her plans for their nursery, clothes and so much more. How terribly exciting and frightening all at once to have twins!  Twice the excitement and twice the worries.

Two weeks after I gave birth to Keira she was scheduled for a c-section and her twins joined Keira in the NICU.  They were strong and having gone to 36 weeks they did really well and spent only a couple weeks in the NICU and were released long before Keira.

I haven’t spoken to her since our time in the NICU, but I often wonder how she  got through those first few difficult months with twins when at times I could barely manage just one.

Multiple birth is a joyous occasion that is understood and cherished by Little Me. They understand that expecting a multiple birth is both a magical and a worrisome time in your life. They would like to help you focus on the double (triple, quadruple or more) adorable smiles and giggles you’ll have coming to you in droves! To make things just a little easier, Little Me would like to offer you a “Welcome to the World” gift after your children’s births.
