Woolzies Handmade Dryer Balls Review and Giveaway

by Elizabeth

in Product Review

Since my daughter was born I’ve began to actually think about some of the chemicals we expose ourselves to a little more.  I have always hated the cost of dryer sheets and liquid softener but I never really thought of all the chemicals they expose us to.  I’ve never used softening agents with her clothing but I kept using sheets with my own clothes not really knowing what else I could do.

When I learned about Woolzies Handcrafted Dryer Balls I was excited to give them a chance to see if they could help me break my dryer sheet habit for good just in time for the new year!

Woolzies are pure handmade New Zealand wool dryer balls that soften your laundry naturally without any of the chemicals of conventional fabric softeners. Unlike the plastic dryer balls, they are PVC free and won’t fall apart or melt on you. Woolzies save time and energy by cutting down on drying time by an average of 25% per load. They also help reduce static and wrinkles.

Woolzies come in a set of 6 and you can see they are a generous size in the picture above.  This is enough for a normal sized load and they last up to 1,000 uses.

I started off with a load of cloth diapers to test if they would be able to reduce drying time.  I typically just hang dry my fluff as I am afraid of them being destroyed by the heat plus the inserts take forever and ever to dry when I have put them in the dryer.  I found Woolzies cut a good 20 minutes off the drying time and only 2 of the inserts were slightly damp.

Next I tried it on Keira’s clothing which is typically full of static (annoying!) and found they did about as good of a job as my normal dryer sheets do.  This was the first time folding her laundry wasn’t a giant pain.  I was really pleased with this.

This is a great product for the Eco-conscious among us.  Since they do reduce drying time they also reduce your electrical use.  If used to completely replace dryer sheets and fabric softener you are also reducing the amount of chemicals you use.  On top of that they create much less waste since they have such a long life compared to sheets and liquid softener.

As if that weren’t enough, Woolzies are handmade in the democratic republic of Nepal which provides a steady source of income to the women of this developing nation.

I would definitely recommend Woolzies dryer balls to everyone -  finally feel comfortable adding something to my baby daughters loads!  Whether you are looking to decrease your footprint, save some cash or just tired of constantly exposing your family to harsh chemicals; Woolzies are a wonderful solution.

I love that they last for 1000 loads! I never imagined that wool dryer balls would last so long. I just assumed that at some point they would begin to deteriorate after a few months. These would actually last for quite some time. Plus, having 25% more drying efficiency could really cut back on electricity usage. Imaging how much saving you could account for after 1000 loads of drying. Even in purchasing these, they would pay for themselves in a months’ time or so for a family who does several loads per week.

Reply

Elizabeth FrugalMomEh January 3, 2013 at 2:31 am

The Pricing is actually on par with what you would pay for 1000 thousand sheets if you do the math. Most people use more than 1 sheet per load which means 1000 sheets generally does not equal 1000 loads. This means that Woolzies Dryer Balls are actually inexpensive compared to other options or at worst priced competitively but certainly not expensive. Remember that a higher up front cost doesn’t make a product expensive.

I checked out Woolzies and something I learned that “because WOOLZIES bounce around in your dryer, they naturally separate and create space between your laundry, thereby allowing the hot dryer air to circulate better and subsequently cutting down on drying time by about 25% in large loads and as much as 35-40% in small loads. This of course saves both time and money for you and energy for the environment.” I likie

beyond the “no chemicals”- I hate the trash that dryer sheets create. The new bounce thing that is suppose to be like a dryer sheet ‘stick’ or something just doesn’t seem right to me (does it slowly dissolve or just stop working and we have to guess??). The sad thing is that as much as I claim to want to be Eco-conscious, I still use both fabric softener and dryer sheets because of both my static problem and needing to remove cat hair from hubby’s work cloths. Yes, I have found it takes both to solve the combined problems around here.
Unfortunately, your great review didn’t talk about how the Woolzies interact with pet hair.
